Peckham
A modern staircase should be more than just a structure that complies with building regulations and functionality standards. A contemporary staircase is also about a unique design that reflects the atmosphere and style of the entire home. Another example of this is our new staircase project called Peckham, which is based on the idea of combining luxury with modern trends in staircase construction. This is one of the projects in the V.PSTAIRS portfolio that is sure to inspire you!
Peckham is a unique floating staircase, custom-made by V.PSTAIRS. The idea behind this project is to combine different materials for the staircase, which many people believe cannot be used in the same design. However, the end result speaks for itself, and we consider it a work of art.
The creation of the Peckham staircase required careful planning and hourly actions, so we started by developing a work plan. The entire process, from design planning to final installation, took our specialists six weeks. This period included numerous consultations, discussions on the choice of materials, the creation of a model, the manufacture of the structure, and its installation at the customer’s site. This project has its own complexities, features, and advantages, which we would like to share with you below!
“PECKHAM: RIOT OF COLOURS AND MATERIALS IN ONE DESIGN”
AESTHETICS MEETS HIGH QUALITY
At the heart of the design are white quartz treads, specified for their refined texture and natural veining. Each tread is precision-machined with discreet anti-slip edge detailing and professionally sealed to protect against daily wear. The balustrade uses glass (10 mm) with minimal metal fittings, so light flows freely and the geometry remains crisp. A bespoke timber handrail (walnut) softens the touchline, adding warmth against cool stone and black metal. A distinctive feature is the smooth transition of the walnut handrail, with all joints perfectly connected, creating a complete pattern without interruption.
The “weightless” look is achieved through carefully coordinated hidden fixings and a rigid supporting structure tied back to the substrate. Tread anchors, glass fixing points, and handrail brackets were laid out together to avoid visual clutter and to ensure clean, repeatable joints. Vibration control, glass deflection, and usable hand-clearances were verified early, so the staircase feels stable at every step without sacrificing transparency.
TWO FLOORS, ONE LANGUAGE
This staircase becomes the main decoration of the central element of the room, a huge chandelier that perfectly illuminates every step and corner of the entire structure. The Peckham brief covered three flats. We developed a single design language like quartz, glass, walnut and then tuned the details for each layout (landing geometry, balustrade lengths, bracket positions). On site, we templated the glazing for millimetre-accurate fits and coordinated finishes so colour, grain, and stone (quartz) tone read consistently across the development.
It all started with an initial consultation with the client, during which we recorded his wishes. The main challenges we faced were two fleets and the correct combination of different materials in a single structure. Therefore, we began by taking measurements on site and creating a design layout for the structure. We select materials by hand, choosing only the best pieces of marble with the most beautiful patterns.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND FINISHING TOUCHES
The Peckham staircase is finished to feel refined yet practical day to day. The quartz is honed to a soft satin, improving both the look and the sure-footed feel, and it is professionally sealed on all faces to simplify maintenance. Clear glass panels with polished edges preserve transparency, while the metal fixings are kept deliberately minimal and specified in a durable finish so they recede visually. The walnut handrail is shaped for comfort along long runs and tight returns, then treated with an oil that keeps the touch warm and allows easy local refreshes.
At V.PSTAIRS Ltd, our main objective is to recreate in reality what the customer wants to see. Naturally, we combine aesthetically pleasing design with all the necessary safety measures. These days, the Peckham staircase demonstrates how different materials can be successfully combined in one project to make it look perfect. From the very moment of the customer’s request, our experts followed a clear plan and stuck to the client’s key idea to realise this project. The Peckham staircase is a sign that any of you can get a staircase at home, where all ideas can be implemented.
