Hartwell Balustrade
“HARTWELL: COMBINING ANTIQUE WITH CONTEMPORARY”
Have you ever wondered just how seamlessly a balustrade can blend into the overall design of a staircase? Don’t underestimate the importance of this structural element if you want a staircase that’s perfectly suited to your property. Fancy a real-life example? Just take a look at the Hartwell balustrade, crafted by the specialists at V.PSTAIRS. Its uniqueness lies in the absence of welds, the galvanised metal finish, and a design inspired by ancient motifs. Let’s take a closer look at this masterpiece!
This structure was originally conceived as one of the main elements of the entire staircase. Looking at the result, one can conclude that the main objective was achieved perfectly. The Hartwell balustrade is impressive and memorable at first glance. All this is thanks to a well-thought-out design featuring curved forms and a combination of different techniques and the finest materials.
What sets Hartwell apart from the other balustrades in the V.PSTAIRS portfolio? The design was developed by V.PSTAIRS using old antique drawings as the starting point. These references gave the project its decorative language, but the final balustrade was not a copy of a historical piece. It was adapted for a modern home, modern safety expectations and modern production standards. The result is a long, flowing metal balustrade with an antique brass character, a brass handrail and a continuous pattern that follows the shape of the staircase and gallery with confidence.
Designed From Antique References
The visual identity of this balustrade comes from its pattern. The balusters are more than just vertical posts. They form an elegant repeated design with slender lines, soft arches, and a delicate crossing detail. This gives the balustrade a handcrafted look without making it feel heavy. The pattern has enough detail to catch the eye, but it still allows light to pass through the landing and down into the stairwell.
Antique-inspired metalwork often needs careful balance. For this project, the design was adjusted until it felt right for the home. The curves of the metalwork follow the movement of the landing, while the brass handrail gives the whole structure a warm upper line.
The end sections were also treated as important design elements. The handrail endings were made with authentic style details, giving the balustrade a finished and thoughtful appearance. These details matter because they are the parts people notice when they walk along the gallery or approach the staircase. A simple ending would have made the design feel incomplete. The shaped brass detail gives the project its final note.
BALUSTRADE:
Mild Steel
Seamless Structure Made with TIG Welding
One of the main achievements of this project is the absence of visible seams. The balustrade was designed to read as one continuous piece, without obvious joints interrupting the rhythm of the pattern or the line of the handrail. This effect is difficult to achieve on a balustrade of this scale, especially when the structure includes long runs, curved sections and decorative metalwork.
- High-quality TIG welding was used to create a clean and precise result. This welding method allows strong, controlled connections with a refined finish.
- The same attention was given to the brass handrail. On the Hartwell project, the handrail follows the curve of the landing smoothly, including the return and end detail.
- There are no harsh breaks in the line. This gives the balustrade a calm, elegant movement.
The smooth turns are also practical. Sharp corners can feel uncomfortable and can interrupt the natural use of a staircase or landing. The rounded transitions make the balustrade safer to use and more pleasant to touch. They also soften the look of the metalwork, which is important in a home with such a light and refined interior.
Delicate Metal Craftsmanship
The balusters are made from steel and finished to achieve an antique brass appearance. There are different ways to create this effect, depending on the client’s requirements and the technical needs of the project. One option is an antique brass paint finish applied professionally by spray gun. This allows the metalwork to receive a controlled colour and surface tone while keeping the structure strong and practical.
Another option is an electro-galvanic finish. This is an electrochemical process where a brass layer is applied to a base metal such as black steel or stainless steel. It gives the balustrade a richer metallic character and can be used when the design calls for a more authentic plated finish. Both approaches require proper preparation and careful finishing, because the surface quality is a key part of the final appearance.
The handrail itself is made from brass. Brass is a traditional material for decorative interiors because it has warmth, depth and a natural sense of quality. In this project, the brass handrail works beautifully with the antique brass effect on the metalwork (S275) below. It adds a subtle contrast in texture while keeping the full balustrade within one elegant visual family.

Collaboration Shaped by Detail
This project was completed in close collaboration between V.PSTAIRS and the client company. The client paid particular attention to the decorative details that would become part of the home’s everyday atmosphere. This made the project more personal. The balustrade was not chosen as a standard product. It was created as a bespoke architectural feature for a specific interior and a specific vision.
That collaboration influenced the final result. The proportions, the antique-inspired pattern, the handrail endings and the overall finish were all considered carefully. The goal was to make the balustrade feel integrated, not added at the end of the build. Looking at the completed installation, it is clear that the piece belongs in the home. It follows the landing naturally and frames the stair opening with elegance.
