The Ealing project is the clearest illustration of how an appropriate outdoor metal staircase can transform a garden area into an extension of the building. This is a project created and introduced by V.PSTAIRS to one of the private residences in the UK, where the client was in need of a pragmatic and aesthetically pleasing way of linking a garden floor with an upper-level terrace.
This was a project made completely on its own, contrary to many outside remodelling. No prebuilt stairs were available on site, and this also gave us the freedom to be completely creative and engineering in the task. The short-term orientation of the client was on the durability, compactness, and regularity of design with the classical front of the property. Instead, we decided to have a customised helical staircase. It is ideal as space-saving outdoor stairs in a small garden space.
Based on the first consultation, our team closely collaborated with the client to know how the staircase was going to be utilised and how it would be aesthetically engaged with the surrounding environment. Several extensive site surveys and measurements enabled us to come up with a custom-made garden stair design which fits quite well within the available space, whilst being comfortable and safe enough to be used on a daily basis.

Steel craftsmanship for outdoor environments
The Ealing staircase is made of all steel, thus being a strong and dependable garden staircase steel solution to be used in outdoor conditions throughout the year. So, this project is one of many stairs in our portfolio, which is completely exterior and well thought-out detailing to the open-air environment. Each step has been laser-cut from superior-quality steel sheets, and the client is left with options for decorative patterns that contribute to both beauty and usefulness. Our team installed decking made of mahogany wood. This material was chosen for a reason. This red African wood does not deteriorate when exposed to moisture, which is typical for the British climate.
The openwork construction is beneficial in draining water and keeping the surface moisture down, and this is valuable to outside steel steps in the UK climate. All staircase parts were very well prepared in advance. To ensure long-term corrosion protection on the steel structure, the treatment was done in two layers of primer, after which a long-lasting painted finish was applied. The matte black colour is classic and complements the existing wrought-iron balcony railings, giving the property a harmonious appearance.
From concept to completion with V.PSTAIRS
Designing and installing metal-framed garden steps in a confined outdoor setting requires careful planning and precision. For the Ealing project, particular attention was paid to the staircase geometry, fixing points and clearances, ensuring a seamless integration with the building facade and garden layout.
From the initial site visit and design development through to fabrication and final installation, the project took approximately 10 weeks to complete. This timeframe included detailed measurements, bespoke design approval, structural calculations, steel manufacturing, surface treatment and on-site installation. As the staircase was created entirely from scratch, each stage had to be carefully coordinated to achieve an accurate and durable result.
Manufacturing was carried out specifically for this project, with every component produced to exact measurements. Installation took place alongside other garden works, requiring close coordination and a methodical approach from our team. Despite the spatial constraints, the staircase was installed efficiently and securely, meeting all structural and safety requirements.
The completed staircase now serves as both a functional access point and a visual centrepiece within the garden. Its compact footprint, combined with refined metal detailing, demonstrates how space-saving outdoor stairs can deliver both practicality and strong architectural presence.
